Blood type O is the universal donor, because its cells have no glycoprotein 'flags' on their surfaces, and therefore will not be attacked (because they pass through the body 'stealthily') by anyone with types A, B, or AB blood =]
Everyone makes more blood than they need - that's why you don't perish when you lose a bit (or more!) of blood in accidents, from cutting open your finger to something more serious. However, if it is produced in excessive amounts, it could be more of a serious problem. If this is a case, he should certainly go see a doctor for a more comprehensive evaluation than we are able to make through the internet.
Hope this helps ! |

What? I'm type O positive. I give blood every 8 weeks because the blood banks need it. I never heard of a disease where your body makes more blood than it needs. |

Ok... One thing does not have anything to do with the other. People with High hemoglobin counts , are advised to give blood in order to balance it ..Type "O" blood donors are very valuable since this type of blood can be donned to any other type ( A, AB, B and O) meanwhile all the other types of blood can only gave blood to the same type. But there is no relationship between your type of blood and your body over production.

O type doners are called Universal because anyone can receive blood from this type. No harm, body reproduces its own blood, unless he's bone marrow doesn't work. But if he's donated in the past, he should be ok. |

Are you sure he has an illness, or is he just a blood donor?
Blood type O is the most common bloodtype, and is the one group that is accepted by most people in need of a transfusion.
If his body is making more blood than he needs, which is something I've never heard of, then this is a medical condition that has nothing to do with his blood type. |
