British girl moving to Paris? |
I'm just finishing University here in the UK and am considering a move to Paris. I've studied enough French for language to not be a problem. I'm just looking for any advice/recommendations from Parisians or anyone who has made the move from another country?
Where is a good place to live for a young, single person - safe, but not too expensive?
I've visited the city a few times and have been in love with it since I first set foot on Parisian soil. Any advice much appreciated! |

I don't know if you planned to just visit for a few months or if you intended to work in France. I have heard British ppl say that the pay is somewhat better in France than in the UK. Of course, I should think that you wanted to move to Paris to experience French culture. When selecting an apartment, you have to do it in person (and not just using the net). A hotel clerk in Paris could better advise you on which arrondissement would be safer. Safety is important but regardless of the neighborhood, walking around at night and/or drunk is never a good idea in any city. Areas around train stations for some reason tend to be rougher. You might look around for signs on windows : F2 a louer or Type 2 a louer. F2 or Type 2 means a 2 room apartment (one bedroom and one sitting room). The rooms can be VERY small and you may have to buy the appliances-- refrigerator, hot plate, almost certainly an oven (most ppl just get a toaster oven or microwave) and many renters have to pay for their own water usage. Chambres a louer are popular with students and they are one room apts with a community bathroom in the hall way (one house I saw had the WC facing the courtyard on the lst floor and one had to walk down the stairs and outside to the center courtyard to get to it). Some rooms will have a shower in the room, but the toilet in the hallway restroom. If you are studying in France, CROUS can give you referrals or you could even live in a dormitory. |

British culture and French culture aren't that different, so there wouldn't be culture shocks, there are many other Europeans here, especially in the capital. There are many English speaking communities in Paris. Also UK is a part of the EU lots of advantages!
In my opinion, since you speak French you shouldn't have any problem settling down here.
@ the last speaker( Acss)when I said the French and British culture were not that different I meant in comparison to Arabs, Mexicans, Chinese, Japanese ...etc |

I lived in Paris for part of my degree! It's a Brilliant idea!
Thing is, nowhere in Paris is gonna be cheap, for a small studio appartment in 'quatrieme' you'll be paying about €600/month and you won't get much cheaper than that anywhere... to be honest though, what will be the biggest challenge is finding a job - unemployment in France is considerably higher than in the UK, and the French prefer to give jobs to French people in a way the British never cared.
but by the way.... winter in Paris is cooooooooooollld!
and the culture isn't 'just like the uk' as someone on here said, it's nice, but it is different, so be prepared about 3 months in to start feeling home sick for a little while.
but looks like i'm about to tell my life story... so i'll sign off with "remember, first sunday of every month most the museums are FREE"
good luck! |
