Officially, it's Marseille.
Marseille, (English alt. Marseilles — French: Marseille- Latin: Massilia) is the second-largest city of France and forms the third-largest metropolitan area, with 1,516,340 inhabitants at the 1999 census and 1,605,000 inhabitants in 2007 (Paris and Lyon are larger). Located on the Mediterranean Sea, it is France's largest commercial port
Lyon (Arpitan : Lyion), also known as Lyons (former names include Lugdunum), is a city in east central France. It is the third largest French city, the first being Paris and the second Marseilles. It is a major centre of business, situated between Paris and Marseilles, and has a reputation as the French capital of gastronomy and a significant role in the history of cinema.
Together with its suburbs and satellite towns, Lyon forms the second largest metropolitan area in France after Paris, with 1,783,400 inhabitants at the 2007 estimate, and approximately the 20th to 25th largest metropolitan area of Western Europe. |

Hello-Paris
 |
There is always a competition between Lyon and Marseille.
According to me, these 2 towns are approximatively the same size, according to the number of inhabitants, but farther behind Paris. |

oh, you didn't ask the right question.
If the biggest city of France is Paris, there is a real fight between Lyon and Marseille to know which is the second biggest of the two.
If you ask this question to a Lyonnais, he will say you that Lyon is the second biggest, and if you ask to a Marseillais, he will give you Marseille
In fact, the both are true:
- Marseille is the second biggest for the intra-muros town, Lyon is the third
- Lyon is the second biggest is you considerate the toxn with the suburbs...
Choose the best you think! |
