Can I use American Express credit card in Europe?

I have heard that not many place accept American Express in Europe. Is that true? How about in France? I would like to use Amex for some reasons.

It is true. Amex is not very widely accepted in France. They charge the merchant a very high percentage (when I lived there and ran a shop, it was over 5%). Visa charges very little (as I recall, about 1.5%) so it is accepted almost everywhere.

Upscale places are more likely to take Amex as well.

I'd never travel in Europe without a Visa. Visa is taken everywhere there.

chav69
yes you can

datura9876
I sure hope so... it is, after all, everywhere you want to be....

npm
Just agreeing with others - MC and Visa are much more common. Make sure you have at least one.

jlatson77708
yes and check with there banks

Barbara G
As in many countries, Amex is not accepted because of excessive costs.... it really depends on the place of business... If I were you, I would have a second more accepted credit card, MasterCard or Visa..

cats4me
Amex can be used in Europe if the store accepts it, but it is not as widely available as Visa and MC, which are accepted everywhere. Take your Amex, but take another one as a backup. Most Visa and Mastercards can also be used in ATM machines for cash...not sure about Amex.

bordasimus
Yes, in Belgium anyway

Sagittare
Yes you can, but most shops will not take it, or they will act like they will and then say it doesn't work. When I lived in France and England it was just a hell of a lot easier to use cash, but don't carry to much on you. Visa is usually a safe bit though.
