An EHIC card doesn't provide anything other than fairly basic, general GP-level health care when abroad. Anything requiring your child to be flown home, or causing the cancellation of the trip etc. would only be covered by your own insurance. In short, you need both - the EHIC is free, and can be applied for online at:

http://www.dh.gov.uk/en/Policyandguidance/Healthadvicefortravellers/index.htm

Check with the teacher who is organising the trip. Normally the school will take out group insurance but ask each child to have an EHIC card too, for minor medical problems which may occur, involving sums less than the insurance company's excess.

Penfold
Each person, including children, need their own EHIC card. There is a pre-requisite in UK travel insurance policies that the insured must have an EHIC card - the insurance policy will not pay for what the state will provide under the EHIC agreements.

Usually schools do like pupils to take an ehic (E111) form/card with them but they also tend to have travel insurance for the group. You can obviousl take out your own insurance but can only claim off the one.

i am sure the school will have the whole party insured....could check with a teacher though

welcome news
You don't need an EHIC card at all! This card provides for medical treatment on a reciprocal basis (and replaced the old E111). You can obtain better cover by buying travel insurance (check that any dangerous activities are covered).

One advantage of the EHIC is that if you do have this card and need medical treatment then many travel insurers will waive the excess on the policy - check the policy wording or key facts document to confirm this before buying.
