Yes you do.
You are travelling abroad and for that you need a passport.

A passport is voluntary - why are you expecting someone to "fund" it??

You do need a passport

You both do need travel documents to travel to France and a passport is the only document you do need. I would contact veterans uk at www.veterans-uk.info they should be able to help, they also have advisors on 0800 1692277 free phone, as a carer you qualify for access to their help and advice

mark m
Yes you will.

Definitely yes for both of you. Have a nice trip.

Anyone passing through a passport control will need a passport regardless of the reason for travelling e.g. to care for an OAP. I'm afraid that you are unlikely to get any help funding the fee for your passport. Perhaps a sympathetic friend or relative of yours could help.

The Daily Mail collected about £120 000 to cover costs for veterans wanting to return to the D Day beaches. Perhaps it might be possible to get a grant from them,

You both need a passport, same as anyone else leaving the British shores.
