Can anyone recommend something to do in paris which is an absolute once in a lifetime experience?

Going there tomorrow and I want to do the tourist-y things, but also some not so tourist-y things to see what the real paris is like, but is there something really amazing and memorable I should do while I'm there?

You don't say how long you will be there. If your visit extends thru Sunday evening then I suggest you go have dinner with Jim Haynes.

Jim is one of the people who defined the 1960's and who has and continues to define what "avant garde" is. He founded the Edinburgh Festival Fringe, started the London Traverse Theatre Company, lunched the sexual freedom newspaper "Suck" in Amsterdam (along with, among other Germaine Greer) and has taught taught Media Studies and Sexual Politics at the University of Paris.

Every Sunday he opens the doors of his Paris Atelier for a dinner party and open bar (everyone kicks in 20 euros). Ask and you'll be invited. Details can be found here: http://www.jim-haynes.com/index.htm

It's great, a collection of tourists, old friends, celebrities, lunatics, artists, philosophers, college professors,co-eds, and the curious (often very curious).

Visiting the catacombs would be quite amazing

Dine in the restaurant at the top of the Tour Montparnasse. Pricy. It's on about the 56th floor with views over Paris from the Eiffel Tower to (if you cran your neck) Sacre Coeur.

Or simply go there for a drink. Sunset is best, to see the lights come on.

At the tower, do not take the outside stairs for the viewing areas, but inside, find the lift which only goes to the restautrant. Drinks good quality, about 10 euros each, but the view is superb.

I'm soooo glad you asked. Ive been to Paris six times and i never get bored. the best thing i did personally, was going to the Eiffel tower at night. it has to be at night. because at night at the Eiffel tower, the Eiffel tower gets lit up.

I hope you have the best time ever in your life!
good luck!

I just returned from Paris and I was really impressed by the Chateau de Versailles. Maybe you can go there for a day. It's really beautiful.

Find someone who can guide you through the catacombs. Not the official ones that are only a tiny, cleaned, organized subset of the whole thing, but the trues ones, that some knowledgeable people can access without authorization. You'll be able to see french and german shelters from World War II and things like that. I could do that for you but I'm not sure I am motivated enough (so many people ask me, but a foreigner could be a nice experience to exercice my poor spoken english).

If you want an easier thing to do, go from the Concorde to the "Quai François Mitterand" (via "Quai des Tuileries") by night, but do it by car/taxi. I swear that the view there at night is really breathtaking.

Mount Martre, Notre Dame, the Louvre, the Paris Opera House... you should be able to see these all in a day if you hustle, but it would be best to take more time, of course.
