If you live anywhere near the Midlands and NEC in Birmingham, the Camping and Caravan Show will be on in February and there will be quite a few stands with reps handing out all sorts of info on Camp Sites in France and Spain. It will also enable you to pick up any equipment you might need. A good day out.
We mostly camped on the West Coast, apart from one venture right down to Chambery.

There are hundreds of lovely camp sites, normally the municipal camp sites are well equipped and cheaper than the private ones.
Have to recommend Camping de Citie at Carcassonne, out of this world and you will never want to leave it.

One of the great things about holidaying in France is the enormous number of campsites of all sizes, facilities and qualities all over the country. In fact, all towns/villages above a certain size must have camping facilities and some of the best, and cheapest, for transit camping, as opposed to long-stay holiday camping, are run by the local authorities. These are called "Camping Municipale" sites. Those of us who have camped in France for many years could recommend hundreds of sites but it is best to choose your own. I suggest that you work out your route through France, using a Michelin atlas (or the route finder facility of the AA or Michelin) bearing in mind that french motorways (Autoroutes) are toll-paying and quite expensive. Having worked out your route, buy a good campsite guide and plan your night halts using that. Most people use the Michelin Guide "Camping and Caravaning en France" (WHSmith's) but a better guide is the Caravan Club's Guide to European Campsites (Volume 1). Altho' this is from the Caravan Club it can still be bought at WHSmith's but it is cheaper if you are a member of the C.C. If you have a caravan I suggest you join the CC, if you have a tent join the Camping and Caravanning Club and then you will be able to make all your ferry and insurance arrangements thro' them. The CC Guide is compiled from reports sent in by members who have used the sites and give the sort of info that other guides do no include such as if the site suffers from road/aircraft/railway noise, the standard and state of the toilet blocks, etc. Need more info - post another question.
