Learn the name of everyday objects such as plates and glasses. Then learn the names of stuff like water. Then learn how to put them in a sentence like "I would like a glass of water". Just keep expanding with objects and sentences. And find French movies to watch so you hear full conversations. Try to watch without the subtitles. Finally take note of words that sound familiar, you will be surprised at how many there actually are.

i havent taught myself french really but my whole family is french
and speaks it, except me and my siblings.. they arent like 100 percent
english is their main language but they still are fluent in it. the way me
and my siblings learned it was buying a book, its actually a childrens
book with like 500 french words and it teaches you and catagorizes them, granted we got it years ago but it is still better than the adults ones- they go too much in depth and are to hard to understand

Start with simple words and go on to phrases like "Where is the washroom?" Just be careful that you dont mix any of them up!
