You might have to use a bank during banking hours at the counter, but yeah, they work and it's better than making a lot of purchases on a credit card because they charge a currency exchange fee a lot of times.
PayPal has their own credit card and that has proved to be the cheapest for us even though it is in reality a debit card. |

My debit card worked in India. |

The Link ATM's won't work overseas because the ATM's are in the UK. You cards will not work overseas either if they are badged only as Link cards. If your cards are badged with another card type such as Visa, Mastercard then the odds they will work overseas. You need to speak to your issuing bank. |

There are no Link machines on the Continent. You may be able to use the machines that they do have, but your bank will probably charge you.
I came back from the Dam a couple of months ago, and I bought a Travel Money Card from the Post Office a week before I went. It's like traveller's cheques, but plastic and more flexible. If you lose it it can be replaced, you can use European cash machines for free, you can use it as a debit card, etc. It's provided by Visa, so it's widely accepted.
In the interests of fairness, I think American Express and another company make similar products, but the Post Office is cheaper. |

Yep! but there is a $5-$6 service charge for the service. Some merchants take credit cards for purchases. Probably the safest way to shop. |

I went on a world trip last year and my Switch/Maestro card worked in every country. Look for symbols in your card that appear on the csh machine, ie Cirrus, Maestro.
You will be charged a minimum withdrawal amount and then the specified exchange rate is another 'charge' worth considering.
Credit cards will also be fine, but ofetn cost more than a debit card. |
