Swimming in the Seine is not permitted, but this is not due to the water quality. The Seine was cleaned up in the 1970s when only three species of fish were left, there are now 23 species of fish and the water quality is good.
However, swimming is dangerous due to the large number of barges and tourist boats using the river, and there is also a strong undercurrent. There is also a naturally occuring bacteria in the water that can cause digestive problems if swallowed.

Since the water quality is poor, it's not technically allowed. However, there always seem to be one or two tourists who fall / are pushed in during 'Paris Plage' week =]
Oh, and there's also a pool set up floating on the Seine during this week.

no no no swimming in the Seine. first it is still very much polluted and not recommended to swim, second of all the stream of it is too strong and if you tried to swim you would taken by the current and most likely you will drown.
