You don't have to stay near CDG. Just make sure that a station of RER B is nearby (it goes to CDG). Gare de Nord, Chatelet would be your targets and here is the subway map: http://www.ratp.info/orienter/cv/carteparis.php. There are plenty of small hotels near Gare de Nord. You can also try one of the following, although it's more of suburbs (I quote my own answer to a similar question):

Accor group (http://www.accorhotels.com/accorhotels/i... has two cheap chains: Formule 1 (http://www.hotelformule1.com/formule1/in...
and l'Etap (http://www.etaphotel.com/etaphotel/index...

You might consider a competing group - Louvre Hotels (http://www.louvrehotels.com/en/louvre-ho... which has chains like Premiere Classe and Hotel Campanile.

Formule 1, l'Etap and Premiere Classe are chepaer, Hotel Campanile is more expensive.

Don't stay near CDG, stay in Paris. CDG is in a suburb, about 45 minutes from Paris and there is NOTHING to do around there.

I went to Paris last year and stayed at 'Du Chat Noir' 68 Boulevard de Clichy. The room was clean, had shower and tv etc. It was very very cheap. Its located next to the Moulin Rouge. The area can be quite noisy at night, but it is an excellent location to get about Paris for sightseeing.

No Visa needed. When I went I found a place on Craigs list on-line and it was clean, friendly, spoke English, and inexpensive. I'd recommend that you try craigslist.com.
