My husband used to live in Fontenay aux Roses, next to Sceaux, both of which are nice. They are like suburbs, outside of Paris, but a short train ride can get you to Les Halles, where you can go practically anywhere in Paris, including Champs Elysees. Both cities have convenient groceries, post office, etc. and are family oriented. Many people in the area have small dogs as well. Fontenay has a very nice park with a library and bicycle tracks as well as places to walk and run. Sceaux has a small (compared to say... Versailles) castle with sprawling grounds that are open to the public for all sorts of leisure activities. I don't know how cheap these cities are in comparisson to other cities around paris, but I know I felt safe there, even coming home late at night. I used to walk to the grocer by myself, and I never felt that I was ever in any danger. Best of luck!

I can't help with the original question, but about how to understand the french better, I suggest you read the best answer on this page:

You'll understand why some rare americans don't like it over there.

Have a great time in Paris !!! You'll love it!

I go to Paris every summer and feel absolutely no "anti-american" sentiment. If someone else found this ruined her vacation, it was due to her own attitude.
I've felt very safe renting near the Boulevard Saint Michel and Boulevard Saint Germaine. Lots of people are always around until late at night. There is really nothing cheap in Paris.

Please do not listen to that "imagine world" nonsense. The only anti-anything sentiment in France is against people who make blanket statements like that and walk around with an attitude to match! France is like any other country. Some Americans love it, some don't. But the ones who propagate this false notion that the French hate Americans are always the ones that went to France expecting to act like in their own backyard, which it is not. It is a foreign country with a different culture. People who come to America make an effort to figure out how to live with Americans. The same courtesy should apply the other way around. The French love Americans, except for "those" Americans. I don't need to say any more about it.

Regarding a rental in Paris, most places are really very safe. There are only a few areas that would make you nervous, not because you'll be in any real danger, but because they'll just "seem" a bit seedy. Crime in Paris is nothing close to a New-York or L.A. kind of thing. Regardless, if you're looking for something near the Champs Elysees, that's super safe (but not cheap).
You can find plenty of Paris rental listings by going to:

try to stay on the western side of paris. some good arrondisements that are safe and not too expensive are the 8th, 9th, 17th and some parts of the 16th. plus - these are not to far away from the champs elysee.

Why would you want to live in Paris and be exposed to Anti-American sentiment? Did you know that France is the most Anti-American country in Europe. My daughter made the mistake of going to Paris for her honeymoon, and it turned out to be a nightmare from the Hotels, restaurants and even the airport, all because she and her husband were Americans, and most of the people, even those who are in tourism don't think of anything about biting the tourist hands that feed them.

Either way, it is your decision. I wish you the best of luck.
