Cheapest, easiest tour/trip to Versailles from Paris? |
I am travelling to Paris and would love to spend an half day inVersailles, exploring the palace. Having never been to Paris before, I want to know what is the best way to go. I have read a little about the "forfait loisir". Are these readily available? Or is a tour a better bet - though pricier? |

If you are traveling alone, I say go with the tour. If you or some one you are traveling with feels comfortable renting a car--go that way. Once you get out of Paris, it is an easy drive and well worth being able to stop and go--at your own pace. Getting out of Paris is the key.
If you are staying in central Paris the best way to get around to the sites is "La Cars Rouge". I don't know why they call these double-decker English style buses cars. (& not "autobus") You can get on and off at your leisure and they run every 15 minutes--stopping at all the major site. They were about 20euro/person when I was there last. They provide you with headset and provide an audio tour. The tickets I believe our good for two days. Most of Paris is very walkable, but when your tired of walking and caring all your stuff--these buses are lifesavers. |

But if you don't have a decent guidebook, or if you don't want to travel alone, use the Cityrama tour company. It's one of the best in Paris and you can find it in Place des Pyramides, near Jardins des Tuilleries. Bon voyage ! |

You can get to Versailles by either the RER C line to the Versailles-Rive Gauche station followed by a ten minute walk to the Chateau or by the #171 bus from the Pont de Sevres Metro stop which will drop you off at the front gate.
The various sights at the Versailles complex are clearly marked. My personal opinion is that a guided tour is an unnecessary expense if you have a decent guidebook. |
