Cost of Living in France?

Is it cheaper to live permanently in France than the UK? The day to day cost of living is less, there is no poll tax, no car tax, no MOT costs, ...

no one can answer this question if u don't say where exactly in france u plan to be. The day to day cost of living in Paris is high, the Riviera is also expensive, but the northside of france is cheap, for instance. U cannot compare two countries, u have to compare city by city, at least for the cost of living.

It's hard to say.
I live in France and have done for the last 8 years.
Some things are cheaper and some things are more expensive.
There is an MOT test, but no car tax. Everything related to cars is MUCH cheaper than the UK.

Transport in general is cheaper, as are restaurants and going out.
Clothes are more expensive, as are supermarkets and electronic equipment.

Salaries are generally lower than in the UK, but we get longer paid holidays.

It's pretty hard to calculate really !

Our MOT is called "contrĂ´le technique" and I assure you, it is paying! No road tax but we have other taxes you don't have... The cost of living is the same than in UK more or less.

At the end of the day, it's more or less the same as salaries are lower than in the UK and income tax is quite high.

Comparatively, for the same job, you would earn let's say £1,500/month in England but surely not its equivalent in euros (2,250€/month) in France, it will be more like 1,500€/month.

Properties are cheaper, you will get a bigger house than in England for the same amount of money (depending which region).

Best option is to work for a UK based company and live in France.

What matters the most is the quality of life.

cherub
It is generally cheaper but the wages are lower. Property is cheaper.

Hi there,
Well it really depends where you want to live in the UK or in France...
If you want to live inthe centre of Paris then it will be more expensive than if you live in Sheffield. As it will be cheaper to live in Dijon (France) than in Buckinghamshire (UK).
It is really based on the location... location... location...
Now in terms of food, restaurants, then it is absolutely much cheaper in France than in the UK. that is a fact. Regarding clothes, same, less expensive in France. but not it depends on your tastes, as you ll find type of clothes or brand in the UK which you will not find in France, and vice versa.
On important thing to keep in mind, is that the salaries are not as high in the France than what you can get in the UK.
Having said that... both countries are cool to live in...
Good luck
