Difference in accents between Northern and Southern France?

What is the difference in the accents between France around the Paris area and Southern France? How do each sound and what are some differences? Is it a great difference?

To compare apples to apples, the difference between the two is pretty much the same as it is in the US. People in the south speak with the southern drawl while people in the north don't have that drawl. Yet depending on where you are in the south, people have different accents and have different expressions (i.e., in Texas, you're always 'fixin' to do something.)

1) There are several different accents in the Paris region. Having lived in Paris for 30 years, I am well aware of this.
2) There are several different accents in Southern France, but personally I have trouble in telling them apart. My wife from Nice tells me the Marseille accent is very different from that of Nice, but they sound pretty similar to me. I can hear the difference, but only just.
The accent in Northern France is different from both of these.

That said, there are two broad classes of accent, north and south. Someone from the south only has to open their mouth to give their origins away.
Of course it's difficult to describe an accent in words. Your best bet is to get hold of a DVD set in Marseilles. Also, the Marseilles accent is widely carricatured by stand-up comics. So you should be able to find sources to compare easily enough.

Same type of language, expressions,
In the south when they talk, it seems more like they are singing - North, like in Nyc, quick and practical -

French-Pipow !!
it's hard to explain ... I live in the north and sometimes we don't understand the people who are in the south because the accent sound so different !
