Do Australian Citizens need a visa to enter france?

It depends on the duration of stay and the purpose of the visit. Australian passport holders do not need a visa for a stay of up to 90 days as tourists or for business visits in every 6 months period. The 90 days limit is counted for the entire Schengen zone which consists of 25 European countries to include France. .. http://www.ambafrance-au.org/france_australie/spip.php?article3160 .. It would require a visa if the purpose of stay should be another.

WISE OWL
There is a visa waiver for Australian tourists, or people travelling for a short stay for business purposes. Anyone admitted under a visa waiver may stay up to 90 days, but is on no account allowed to take any kind of employment, even for only a month.
Otherwise a long stay visa is required.
This still does not allow them to seek employment and they must prove that they are able to support themselves financially whilst they are there, and provide a valid justification as the reason for their stay.

You can check all the details on the official website:
http://www.diplomatie.gouv.fr/en/france_159/entering-france_2045/index.html

You can stay up to 90 without a visa if you have an Australian passport. You will also need a return ticket.

Yes. Things might have changed sice I was there in 2001. We went to England,& from England to france. A Passport was required, but they didn't even look at ours(Aussies & Poms), but Americans had to get off the bus & go through the whole customs check. It was Funny, because the Americans thought that since we didn't have to,the same would apply to them! But you asked about a Visa. I don't know. I guess it depends where you are coming from, your Nationality etc. Why don't you ask at your local travel agent?
