Not at all, as a British national you are part of the European Union and part signatory to the Schengen agreement and can travel within the Schengen zone with only an identity card if you country has them (not for you) or with your passport as identity paper. In the rest of the EU you can travel with just your passport, no need for a visa.

If you had a Commonwealth passport that would be different as the Commonwealth is not part of the EU.

Driving license is not accepted as a valid ID paper by customs, especially without a picture.

taxed till i die,

Ignore the driver's license remark...(American driver's licenses serve as Identity Card as well).

I would take both your passport and ID card.

I dont think you even need to take your passport. Arent they both members of the EU? Just take your drivers license.
