Do people use umbrellas to shield the sunlight in France?
I heard from a friend that only Asian people (Japanese, Chinese and Korean) like using umbrellas to shield the sunlight. If you do this in France, people will laugh at you and think you are strange...
Here...I want to ask...if you are from Europe (or even France)..can you please answer this question?
No, you don't see them used. However, I don't think people will laugh at you if you wish to use one.
Of interest is there are two words used, one if the item is designed for rain protection (parapluie) and one if it's designed for sun protection (parasol.)

Hi, I'm french. It's very rare to see people with an umbrella in France. People will not laugh at all, but they will know immediately, you're a stranger.

I did not see anyone using an umbrella to cover up from the sun, but then again when I was in Paris it rainded almost the whole trip.

I never saw anyone doing it when I lived there. People in western cultures prefer hats or sunglasses.

I can tell you that the answer is no!!! Only old people do! I'm from Guadeloupe FWI, where we have a lot of old traditions from France and we still use 'umbrellas' to shield the sunlight but it's a lost custom in France. People use hats, and sunglasses.

Sometimes.

I think this is only done in Asian countries where being dark is looked down upon - at least it is in the Philippines. Having dark skin in Asia means that you're working class.

I have never seen anyone in France - and generally in Europe - using an umbrella to shield the sunlight. Some people may wear hats sometimes.
