Do the French EVER have fun? Parisians?

I keep hearing about how the French are so stuffy and they're never laid back. I was even told that they don't smile much, and a lot of times smiling can be used as a come on (in other words, to flirt). I'm concerned because I am a laid back person, I don't go wild or anything, but I love to laugh and I smile A TON. I am going to study in Paris next fall for a semester. Any advice? Will people think I'm ALWAYS flirting?

Are the French really as dull and strict as they're made out to be?

I have been learning french for almost 5 years now, usually a semester a year. I plan to speak french first, or attempt to that is.

We do have fun and let it rip... in private among friends. Public face is quiet and not very smiling. We don't smile to strangers, we look neutral polite and indeed smiling has meanings in France. However, among students life is much more laid aback, they laugh and jokey around, probably less rowdily that in the US but they do it, and when you'll make friends you'll see we do know how to laugh.
As well, as a foreigner you are allowed to be a little eccentric, if you tone down your smile (smile, not grin) you'll see that people will react nicely. I am a smiler myself (and French!) so that's experience talking.
What you should avoid is coming out LOUD. That puts us off more than laughing or smiling. You'll notice quickly that we are much quieter than Americans, we speak in a lower tone of voice and loud voices and screeches just makes us draw back. We French are such timid, fragile creatures... :DDDD

Welcome to France, and enjoy your stay.

you know different nationalities have different habits; it's not because you don't see people getting drunk, shouting in the street and showing their bottom that we don't have fun, it's not because we don't smile all the time that we're sad.
(About the smile you should only avoid to smile to a man in the street, because of course he may think it's a come on.)

to Francis..

Yes indeed we only speak French in France...but the English wont really speak other languages right? but many people in France do speak English..so not to worry and we know how to have fun to...

By the way when do you think you will learn other languages?

I was in Paris last year and I saw people around 18-20 out having fun, but then again I met a lot of people who wouldn't know what fun was. But I'm sure thats a generalisation and that they do have fun..

French people in Paris rarely smile, people are stressed out and not laid back at all and I hate this.
Drinks in Paris are so expensive that it is a luxury to be drunk in a bar and indeed drunk people are scarce in bars.
If you are a party animal you will be frustrated in Paris, going out cost an arm and a leg and people don't lash. But personally I have never had fun going out in Paris it was always more fun abroad Germany, Ireland, Spain.

its a bit true. they dont smile much. but they do smile. they also tend to only speak french.

BUT: compared to the germans (specially of berlin and the state of Nord rhein westfallen, and hessen ) they are really smiley and friendly.

Thank god that you dont go to germany! Its the most unfriendly people of the world
