Yes, most of them know english, but I would suggest trying to learn some French at least. It's quite rude going into a country and just expecting them to know your language. That's why you hear most horror stories about how "rude" the French are. Just make an effort to speak their native language, and be very polite. They consider politeness to be of the utmost importance. Bonne chance, mon ami!

I would disagree with a lot of French people speaking English in the countryside. I Iived and studied in Dijon and coming across people that spoke English was very rare. Which is understandable because in France people should be expected to speak French. When I went to Paris, many people spoke French, but in Nice and Strasbourg there wasn't a lot of English speakers either. Which was nice, because to go to France and speak English defeats the purpose of learning French.

I'd say that about half of us speak english fluently enough to suit your needs. however, if I were you, I wouldn't expect to be able to take classes in english while in france. Of course, there are a few of those, but almost only in top grade schools and only if the teacher is an immigrant.

However, we have many students who come here without any knowledge of the french language, and somehow, they manage to get along.

When looking for a school, try to see if there is already something in place to help you learn french real quick. there usually is a few french classes for guys like you. So, keep asking. And I urge you to get in touch with your ambassy (or that kind of administration), they'll tell you EVERYTHING you need to know.

I was last in France this spring, and a lot of people speak English now, even in the countryside. They often use the internet, and learn from English-speaking sites, and this helps them improve their school English.

Of course, it greatly helps to speak French if you go to France, but it is not impossible to go there and make do with English while doing make-up language learning.

Some people do but others do not. I have been studieing english and it is still not perfect (obveously) I would think it as a good Idea to learn some basic words
