Pourquoi Burger King a dĂ» sonner la retraite

TOUTE la planète a succombé à Burger King, le n°2 mondial du fast-food, qui se vante d’être « présent de l’Australie aux Bahamas et du Venezuela à Séoul » à travers près de 9.000 restaurants. Toute la planète ? Non, un irréductible pays résiste, boudant ostensiblement le double Whopper. Las de ces revers, Burger King a annoncé le retrait de ses troupes de l’Hexagone au 31 décembre 1997 pour cause de « faible rentabilité » et de manque de compétitivité.

Pourtant, la situation du géant britannique est florissante sur les cinq continents. Aux Etats-Unis, Burger King commence à chatouiller les talons de McDonald, le n°1 mondial, qui n’est plus prophète en son pays. En Europe aussi tout se présente bien pour le « roi du burger », le groupe entendant même poursuivre son développement en Allemagne, en Espagne.

Alors, comment expliquer cet échec en France ? Certes, le géant anglais a commis des erreurs stratégiques, notamment celle de se cantonner dans les centres-villes alors que McDo allait à la rencontre de ses clients potentiels dans les banlieues.

Au-delà, le fiasco de Burger King révèle l’échec de la greffe des fast-foods à la sauce anglo-saxonne. Le marché de la restauration rapide (sandwiches, hamburgers, viennoiseries, plats à emporter) ne représente que 4,5% de la restauration globale en France. En Grande-Bretagne et en Allemagne, le taux est deux fois supérieur. Ne parlons même pas des Etats-Unis.

Et dans ce cadre déjà restreint, le hamburger n’a pas la cote : il s’en vend un pour huit sandwiches. L’année dernière, le marché s’est même encore rétréci. En ces temps de guerre du hamburger, sus au plus faible ! Burger King tire donc sa révérence et doit se rendre à l’évidence : les Français, attachés à leur gastronomie, préfèrent la bonne vieille nappe à carreaux de la grand-mère aux comptoirs multicolores de l’Oncle Sam. S’il en fallait une preuve supplémentaire, on se tournerait alors vers Pizza Hut ou TGI Friday’s, qui rencontrent les pires difficultés à se développer.

Mais si nos compatriotes n’aiment pas déjeuner sur le pouce, il leur arrive parfois d’y être contraints. Ils choisissent alors les décors aux couleurs boisées de « Paul » ou de la « Brioche dorée » plutôt que les locaux clônés de McDo ou de Quick. Le jambon-beurre plutôt que le double cheeseburger. Et une « exception » française de plus, une !

Bref, le comportement alimentaire en France est bien différent de celui des autres pays, au grand dam des manitous du hamburger, qui n’entendent pas tous rendre les armes. Certains veulent désormais s’adapter au goût « frenchy ». A quand le Big Mac à la sauce béarnaise ?

"Fritz de Cat" and others are right - Burger King itself decided to pull from France in late 1997 because of the lack of growth and poor profitability there. It said that it's better to concentrate its resources in countries with better potential.

No more Burger King in France since 1997... I guess it's because Mc Donalds and Quick are cheaper than Burger King.

There aren't a lot of KFC too. Less than 5 I think in France. Maybe we French judged that Mc Donald and the other fast food named Quick is enough
