I've been to Lille a few times, each time for the same reason - Trains.
People in Britain will see Lille as an change over because of Lille Europe TGV Station since the Eurostar stops there frequently and it allows people to travel all round France.
1st time I had to change to get a TGV to Angers. Second time was again a change to catch a train to Marseilles.
Third time was not a return journey, I was backpacking round Europe and got a train from Bruges and got the Eurostar back. Stayed one night and it was a nice city centre.
I must admit it is a very impressive station, whilst EurLille will probably boost Lille's economy more.
The only other thing I know about Lille is that it has a citadel in the north of the city.

I passed through there one time... And what i heard before going there was that people there are nice, like beer, enjoy going out, like french fries with mayonnaise, have a different accent compared to Paris ... but it rains a lot, am I right ?
