My husband in French, (I am American, and fluent in French). When we met, I was supposed to go live there, which I did for a year, I didn't like it (great for vacation, but didn't like living there) and we came back to US.

What I like: food, culture, paste of life, night life, health care
What I don't like: hierarchy, people's attitude, lack of respect for people's time, arrogance, thinking that the french are better than everybody else, bad treatment of foreigners (even though the French love Americans, and I didn't have personal problems), importance of sex and the way women are still treated, the list goes on....

I spent months in Paris doing dissertation research. Although my French is very bad, the French people were very good to me. My daughter and I had the opportunity to visit friends in Perigord several years later. It was heaven. Americans have mixed feelings about France. Possibly because we are so large, Americans are often uncomfortable in places where they cannot speak the language. If they are not accustomed to travel abroad, they are REALLY uncomfortable, and the human reaction seems to be to find fault with the place that is making you uncomfortable and expect everyone to speak English. Also, Parisians, like New Yorkers, feel they are a bit superior to anyone from out of town, the provincials. Americans also arrive jet lagged and have short vacations that they paid too much for. They feel like they have to hurry hurry and see it all, because they will be gone in 2 days and never get to come back. Whew! The French have historically been friends to America, mostly because they were enemies to England. This last century was a tough one for our relationship. Twice, the Americans came to the aid of the French and for political people, as for individuals, it is difficult to keep the relationship equal when one saves the other's butt and the smaller country is never in the position to return the favor. I have been in Paris when it was best to allow people to assume I was from Canada. I have also been in Paris when US flags were being sold by the Seine. I have been there in the summer, when the locals are away on vacation and parking is easy. I have been there in the winter when the shades of gray work magic with the shining wet stone. I have seen cars flipped and been tear gassed on New Years near the Eiffel Tower. I have seen the ochre countryside of the Dordogne with splashes of bouganvillia and geraneums and roses. I have sunned at Beaulieu sur Mer and lunched topless on the beach. I have shopped the street market on rue de levi for the best produce I have ever seen in the world and Clignancourt for bricabrac and old dishes.

Yes, I love France.

I think France is quite nice, but it really depends where you go. Somewhere in Paris is much better.

I really like France and I would love to live somewhere in Paris some day!
I have done 2 french exchanges where I have lived in a town (Pontault-Combault) with a French Family.
And that was a great experience
I live in England so France is close enough to have 2/3 trips there (I am 16 so I don't know how I manage it!) but the only places I have been to are:
Calais
Disneyland Resort Paris
Paris
Pontault-Combault
and other places for a few hours like Provins
but yes I really like Paris

Not sure about other parts of France but have been to Paris and love it. It is so beautiful and romantic. People are lucky to live in such a nice city. However I really do think the Parisians are really unfriendly and rude. Hopefully the Parisians will realise that many people from different parts of the world think so too and will become nicer to foreigners. That will make France a great holiday destination.
