I speak some French. Enough to be polite and get around. I love France and I find the French people to be more friendly than in other European countries. If you respect them and their culture, there is no problem. When you act like an "ugly American" and expect them to accomodate you , you will be snubbed.

My wife is French, so she speaks it, I speak a little bit of it. France is ok, I find the people much better than the Italians.

Cabal
I speak fluent French and I love France.

Of course, I am also French.

Rillifane
I speak French, as my college professor told me, "comme une vache espagnole" but I seem to be generally understood while I'm in France.

I visited France for the first time almost 35 years ago and have been going back every couple of years ever since. So either I like France or I have a very poor sense of direction.

I love France so much I've not only been there four times in three years, I also started studying French! I'm just starting French 203.

David
Yes on both counts.

I am french - I love my country - and each time I'm back from foreigner countries, I feel really great - few french go abroad - but the ones who do it, are aware of the chance that they have and want to "know all" about the visited countries - Very typically, when they arrive in the visited country, they make all in "order to disappear in the landscape" - the best compliment you can say to a french " oh french ? nooooo - I would never have realized that you are "- typically french run away when being abroad they see another french approaching - that's what I do - I don't pay tons of € to meet my co-citizens in Siberia or Zanzibar, and spend my time holding the siege of the hotel bar with them - I know who does this but I will not say it -

Something else somebody here said that some people in France are obnoxious and think they know all - There's no big risk to reply this - because it's true - and also false - About knowing there are in France people who know very much in their field - and if they are doctors or engineers I don't see why we should complain about this -

Strangely, it's very difficult concerning France to meet people having a really quiet and objective opinion about my country -

My last word is - we accept critics, because so many people visit our country - if those people are fair-play, 1° they ask questions and they'll people to reply 2° they must accept a critical eye on THEIR country - which is not so evident

About being proud of being.... I can't imagine one single french saying this - because sounds so stupid - more often will you maybe find french to tell you " I'm french and very lucky "

everybody must like france like everybody must like USA, Germany cause those are beautiful countries.
What we dislike it's just proud or bad people from any country around the world.
