To Americans they seem rude, but the French aren't more rude than anyone else. The reason Americans consider them rude is because of cultural clash. The Americans and the French have different cultural mores which could appear to each other as insppropriate behavior. For example, if a Frenchman asked for directions in Manhattan, most will try to help him out regardless if he spoke English or not. If an American asked for directions in Paris, first they would notice if he spoke French or not. If he didn't the French would shrug their shoulders and walk away. Now the American might ask the Parisan if they spoke English. Thus peeving the Parisian who would consider that rude. The Frenchman in Manhattan would never in a million years ask a New Yorker if he spoke French. The Frenchman assumes the person doesn't it. The American assumes the Parisian does. Yes, plenty of folks in Paris speak English, but they don't speak it well. They don't want to lose face by trying to speak another language to a total stranger, in this case an American, who might walk away saying the Parisian is stupid because he doesn't speak English well.

Yes, rude and nasty. I have been to Paris three times and will never go back. Every time the people were unpleasant.

The folks of Paris treated me very well. I was an American tourist who's French is limited to 'cafe' au lait' - but I was humble when asking for help, and had no trouble from anyone.

If you dont make an effort to learn a bit of French culture or language, they wont help you out. But I agree with them a bit, because we Americans can be really stuck up sometimes. Americans tend to think of themselves as superior to everyone else in the world, therefor expecting others (like the French) to conform to what we do and help us out whenever we demand it. Doesnt work like that folks. Just learn a few French words and make it seem like you're making an effort to talk to them or learn something about them. Then they should be more then happy to help. Unless they are complete jerks. But hey, every country is full of them.

I find most french people to be polite especially the children. It helps if you try to speak their language instead of shouting at them in english and pointing.

I lived in Paris for a year and they are very nice. They may be a little arrogant at times, especially towards American tourist who think they own the world, but they certainly aren't rude.

French people? No. Parisians? They have an attitude, to be sure. Even people from other parts of france have a hard time dealing with them, so don't listen to excuses about it being you don't speak french or that you are foreign, they are like that with everyone. Just don't take it personally and don't expect instant pleasantness or helpfulness because it's just not the way things are done. It might seem rude but like in most cities most people avoid interacting with strangers if they can help it. It's all about accepting that other people do things differently, otherwise why would you travel at all?

I was there two summers ago and i thought they were fine. Just don't act like they owe it to you to speak English and that they should help you with everything because you are a tourist. Just know some French before you go, and when you speak to a French person try speaking in French first, maybe mixed with a bit of English. They will appreciate your attempt, and if they know English, they will probably help you. Just have a wonderful time because France is such a magnificent country!

No I do not think that they are rude at all, they may be the equivilant of rude that americans think of to eachother, but that is not rude to them, and they were very nice to me, as long as you try to speak the language and try your best then they will be nice.

The French people are very proud. Some may even think they are arrogant. They may seem rude to people who don't speak their language, especially visitors who don't care to learn even a few French words. If one speaks French and knows a bit about French culture and custom, he'd find the French people quite friendly and hospitable. The French people may seem hostile to non caucasians, even xenophobic at times! But the truth deep down inside the French mentality is FEAR of those dark skinned, Noth African or Middle Eastern peoples.
