Do you think that Olivier Besancenot can unite the French Left and defeat Sarkozy for the French Presidency :)? |
I read about this guy on BBC News's website, and how he was so popular among many French people (unlike Ségolène Royal)...do you think he could successfully challenge and defeat Sarkozy? :) |

Unite the French left? That's totally against Besancenot's ideas. All ultra-leftists like him won't even unite with the communist party because it's not left-wing enough for them! And socialists are just aliens to him.
He gained some popularity in 2002 and 2007 because he is a little guy, from the lower middle-class, that people could relate to a little better than the wealthy "gauche caviar" socialists which the working class hates (and with good reason). But out of the 4% who voted for him, most were expressing anger and protesting the big parties rather than approving of his whole program.
In my opinion, the guy is somewhat sincere but he is a nut, one of those people who never grow out of their teenage anger against society. At age 15 it might be a constructive anger for self-development, at 35 it's just pathetic and dangerous.
His party (the Ligue Communiste REVOLUTIONNAIRE) has only one goal: divide the left in order to bring the far-right to power so they can justify resorting to a revolution. Unfortunately for him, it didn't even get close in 2002 as moderate Chirac won with over 82% of the votes and in 2007 Sarkozy weakened the far-right by appealing to its voters.
Even though the recession will for sure hurt Sarkozy (and help Besancenot), it won't be enough to defeat him as long as the left remains divided, considering the socialist party's internal divisions and the fact that socialists are choosing to repeat the strategy that led to their failure instead of dissolving their party to create a new one with new people and new ideas.
I did vote for Sarkozy myself as the least of many evils (since the only candidate I respect, centre-right Nicolas Dupont-Aignan, wasn't able to run and left-wing Chevènement, the one I disrespect the least -but who disappointed me the most- and to whom my vote went in 2002, decided not to run and support Royal instead). To go back to the left, I would need a candidate who doesn't tread upon the values of the French Republic and believes in helping people get jobs instead of giving them social benefits to stay at home and remain poor, which is exactly what Besancenot and most of the left do. |

Hello,
BBC News's website ? are you sure ?
Olivier Besancenot means nothing in France, just a little guy who wants to look like Staline, with revolutionary ideas so old that nobody pays attention to him. |
