It's very important when talking to French people to first ask them if they speak English. They really hate it when someone goes up to them and talks English straight away, assuming that they understand and see this as an example of American arrogance.
On the other hand, if you start with just half a sentence in a vague approximation of French, they will be pleased that you have made the effort and then try to show off their English.

I've no idea how many clothes stores there are in Paris. I doubt that anyone has bothered to count them. Several hundred, if not thousands. Don't care. Try going to the French yellow pages directory and counting them - but that would probably miss out quite a few. What a dumb question, unless you are writing a thesis on Parisian fashion sociology.

I just returned from Paris. I speak very basic French. So when I wanted to ask something in English, I always asked
(parlez-vous Anglais), most of the time they said (un petit peu) which means a little bit, they will understand but might not be able to make good sentences in English (with exceptions of course).

One day I wanted to ask about the bateaux mouches, which is a journey in the Seine, I phoned and asked the lady if she spoke English and she just said no.
I had to find someone who speaks French to talk to her and ask about the tour.

most of the french people think they can speak english, but they can't.
They will understand the basics sentences, and only if you speak slowly with a nice english accent. Otherwise they won't understand.

Yes , loads of people speak English and if you didn´t already know Paris is a top city when it comes to Fashion. You will find many department stores, boutiques all over the place.. So have fun..
