Well, in July it is quite easy to enjoy either city on a budget...

Just a couple of ideas for you.

In Nantes, enjoy the Jules Verne Park. It is beautiful in the summer and is quite relaxing for a little stroll or a small picnic. Also, take a day trip out to the country side for a bit of wine tasting. The local vinyards in the Loire Valley are beautiful and delicious.

Paris is of course the tourist capital of the world, but I would suggest just a couple of "off the tourist paths". First the 17th Arr. is not far from the Arc de Triomphe yet maintains a truer French feel, as opposed to the massive flock of tourists everywhere. Nice parks to visit and beautiful houses and architecture as well. Secondly, the Musée d'Orsay is quite easy to find and much more managable than the Louvre (and I beleive that this summer the Louvre will be even busier than normal thanks to the Davinci Code). The d'Orsay is an old converted train station and houses some stunning art work as well.

As for dining in Paris, the Latin Quarter has some very nice, quaint restaurants that are very affordable as well.

Good Luck,

Rent a car and go to Atlantic coast. Pornic and La Baule are just within an hour drive from Nantes. Both are quite nice. Maybe a little bit crowded in July (I visited them in the fall). There is also an island (sorry, forgot the name), where you can DRIVE!

The Pere Lachaise cemetary is right on a metro route, free and a very interesting way to spend the day. There are the graves of many famous people, (most likely the most youve heard of being buried there is Jim Morrison) but when you get there you will realize his grave is just a small part of the whole cemetary. It's actually quite beautiful. You also HAVE to go to the Louvre. I don't' remember how much it is but you have to go, whether or not you lthink you like ARt, you will be moved to tears by some of the things you see there.

Have no idea about Nantes.
In Paris I would certainly recommend The Sacré Coeur, with great (free!!) views across Paris, The Tuilleries for a picnic lunch, The Pere Lachaise cemetry, Les Halles for great shopping, a boat trip on the bateau mouche, and of course the Eiffel Tower.....by night. Bon voyage.
