Use a calling card with an access number in France. It's virtually impossible to find a pay phone that takes coins. A good rate would be 5-10 cents per minute to call the U.S.

The Juicer
Don't count on using coins. Most booths won't take coins. Your best bet is to buy a phone card when you get there. You can get them at tabac, train stations, or major metro stops. The card will have a smart chip that will work at the phone booths. You should be able to get a card for a few euros.

To dial to the US, you will dial 00 + 1 + area code and number.

You may also be able to use your US calling card and this may be a better deal if you are only calling for 2 minutes. Just be sure to have the toll free access number - should start with 0800 or 00800. This will connect you with a US company and you will pay their rates. It's steep per minute but may be the easiest for you. That way you will not need to but the phone card in France and you can spend your time doing things that are more fun and enjoyable.

It's really easy. You need a local phone card. It's fairly expensive. But the quality of the connection is pretty good. You would dial the code for international connections (don't remember, but it could be 0 0), then the country code 1 and then your area code and number. You buy phone cards in a "tabac" typically or you can get them at a train station as well.

You could either buy a calling card or just use your Euro coins to make calls. Most payphones are equipped for both. The bad thing about calling cards are if you don't use it all, it's a waste. A 2 minute call won't cost you more than 3 Euros.

HellinoAmerikanos
too much.
