No translating software or web page will do entire translations very well. It will always sound kind of strange. But if you use your imagination with sites such as google language tools, you'll get an idea of what a text is talking about.

The best web based dictionary that I've found is:

http://www.wordreference.com/fr/index.htm

It's pretty complete, but it's just a word to word dictionary.

http://babelfish.altavista.com will give you the gist of texts in many languages. The original and still the best, as far as automatic translation goes :)

http://babelfish.altavista.com/ has always worked pretty well for me. It will give you a close translation. Sometimes it doesn't understand the verbs - but you'll be able to get the general idea.

The translator on www.dictionary.com is the most accurate translator that I've found on the web, but no online translater gets the perfect answer every time.

There will never be a translation site or software that gets it right. It just isn't possible. But, Google and Babelfish do their best. Language is a very human activity. You might be able to get the basic idea from a Web site but forget about an accurate translation.

This is how Google translated a French Web site into English. The passage is about the Tour de France.

"...the Turn of France deserves better than to rough-hew it. The need for dream which it fills, the values which it can perpetuate must him of being able to look itself in the ice."
