If you're willing to share a bath, you can really get the price down. I looked up my old favorite and sorry, completely renovated and they upped their prices accordingly. Hôtel Rivoli has gone "up market".
I did stay somewhere really dodgy once. The shower was disgusting and I found somewhere else before I had to use it. Wish I could warn you but it was so long ago, things might have changed...
Meanwhile, I just booked a hostel for myself and my kids at the Village for 24 Euros a head;
http://www.villagehostel.fr/
Get back to me next week to find out if it was any good!
Here's another one in a good location;
http://www.montclair-hostel.com/
I love hostels. They're often clean, well-located and you meet tons of people. I've stayed in them all over the world and only once did anything bad happen (bag stolen, owner was devasted). Otherwise, I've been to 50 countries and stayed in more than I can count so trust me, it's a good bet.
I would do that rather than stay in the sticks. Bring your own towels and sheets to save money and flip flops if you use the shared shower.
Good luck~! |

No, not a hotel room. Paris is very expensive. If you are willing to put up with other travelers, hostels are a great way to go. I went to London and was able to get a room (granted I brought my own sleeping bag) for about $30 when I was figuring out how much I spent. Remember that they have different money. Do some research. You really will meet the most interesting people from all over and the one I stayed at was simple (a room with a bed and a sink) but clean and it served its purpose. Check some out and see what you think. Other than that, expect to pay at least $80 a night even for a single room, and that's a very optimistic idea of the cost. |

There are few places for so low a price but Hotel du Marais Bistrot at 16 Rue de Beauce in the Marias has singles (shared bathrooms) for 25€. they have no internet presence so call for reservations at 01 42 72 30 26.
Another inexpensive hotel standby is the Hôtel Tiquetonne at 6 rue Tiquetonne in the 2nd arrondissment. A single will cost you 30€. Again you'll have to phone for a reservation. Phone: 01-42-36-94-58 Fax: 01-42-36-02-94
Neither has a website to my knowledge but then if you seriously want to pay $50 or less to stay in the most visited city in the Western world you'd need a lot of chutzpah to be very picky. |

If you mean 50 US dollars, at the present exchange rate that's only 37 euros. It's easy to find in the suburbs but you'd have to pay more on transportation, which defeats the purpose.
In Paris, it's going to be difficult to find anything at that price. The very few places under 40 euros are not in the most central locations, but within easy access to the center by the métro:
If you are travelling alone, then go to this place: it's 19 to 39 euros/person depending on whether you share or have a private room. The price includes breakfast. http://www.cisp.fr/cisp/index.asp?ln=us
These motels, with shared bathroom are 42-44 euros (but not in the best locations):
http://www.hotelformule1.com/gb/hotel-2539-formule-1-paris-porte-de-saint-ouen/index.shtml
http://www.hotelformule1.com/gb/hotel-3488-formule-1-paris-porte-de-montreuil/index.shtml
Otherwise you'll have to go for a hostel.
EDIT: Here are a couple of cheap B&B in more central locations (some include breakfast in the price, others don't. The price is given for 2 people but half of them have a cheaper price for one person):
http://www.homelidays.com/EN-Holidays-Rental/110_Search/SearchListCH.asp?MODEAFFICHAGE=PRIX_MIN&TYPE_LGT=&NBPERSONNES=&ADR_PAYS=FR&ADR_LOCALISATION=FR+ILEDEFRANCE+75-PARIS&IDX_LOCALISATION=48&noregion=Non+disponible&DESTINATION=&JOURDEBUT=&MOISANNEEDEBUT=&NBJOUR=&PK=
The 3rd one on the list is 39 € for one person, including breakfast. There is an even cheaper one down the list in a very central location if you don't mind the mezzanine. |

I would recommend checking out BookMe.com... You can compare all the major travel websites in 60 seconds, and only search for the ones you want. Keep checking, and eventually you find a GREAT deal! And they only search reputable/reliable sites, so you won't need to worry about anything.

Yeah, right!
The international youth hostel should run about 25US/night. But I think that's actually almost in Versailles. There are hospitals (historical ones) that rent out rooms...not really sure how that works, but they are pretty cost effective. And you might be able to find a spot in a cloister or something.
But real hotel rooms IN Paris run close to $100/night at best.
