The law has a proposed change this year and the age for purchase will go from 16 to 18. Most establishments in France have already adopted the new age limit although it probably will be not be endorsed by the French parliament until April this year
Children under 13 must be accompanmied by someone over 18 if they wish to enter premises where alcohol is sold for on the premises for consumption on the premises (club, restaurant etc)
To purchase alcohol (after April) you will need to be 18 years old.
To drink alcohol with a meal, providing someone over 18 purchases it, you can be 14 years old.
Clubs vary from those for under 18 years old and under 16 years old neither of which serve alcohol - to clubs for those aged over 18 or over 21 - both these serve alcohol. |

On Friday, 6 March 2009, the Chamber of Deputies voted to raise the legal age at which one can BUY alcohol from 16 to 18.
The proposed law has not yet been approved by the Senate and therefore is not yet an actual law. It is ONLY a proposal. The Sneate will consider the bill in April.
Even if the is law is passed in the Senate it does NOT make it illegal for people under age 18 to possess or consume alcohol but ONLY raises the age at which one may buy alcohol.
There is NO age limit on the consumption of alcohol per se. i.e. if you want to let your 5 year old child have a glass of wine with dinner at home its perfectly legal to do so (although probably not a very good idea from a health point of view). |
