it seems a bit bizarre to me that a posh hotel wouldn't open their restaurant at the week-end but there may be reasons.
i was in paris last week-end and near la defense, all restaurants were closed because it's a business area, and offices are closed on sundays.
or it may just be because it's low season and there aren't a lot of tourists around yet... french businesses have a funny way of doing things it's got to be said. like shops being closed on mondays and museums on tuesdays!

Try a meal at the Ritz next time. Pass on the offer of a taxi home though.

I think you should have want to know that while you were there as they were in the best position to tell you the reason.

I don't find it normal for a business paying tax, rent etc... to just close for fun so I think there was a reason in which you didn't want to know while you were there.

I have been in France and know the culture but I am not in the best position to tell you what happened because I wasn't there.

Thanx!

It depends on the date you choose, perhaps it was bank holiday in France or something like that. It's true that in France (generaly speaking) we give heed to the respect of sunday rest.

To respond to the second part of your question, it's true that parisians are not very friendly, if you want to come in Paris, even for a week end, come in August, it's the best time, parisians are at oceanfront and only the relax people stay in Paris ;o)

Ive said this many times....The problem with Paris is that its full of parisians. They are horrible people. And before anyone starts kicking off, yes I am generalising and no Im not being racist or xeonophobic. I like france, I think the people are very nice but as soon as you get near paris things start to change for the worst. Its like any big city, including london.
