The great thing about paris is there are so many quartiers(districts) that all have their unique little treasures.
Yes the big sights you have to do...but what I really love is just picking an area like Le Maree and walking the streets... you can find local chapels, unique little boutiques (look for the Tea shop that is quite famous) and smaller museums that are not as crowded and have plenty of interest and character.
In fact if you get off the beaten path in this huge city you feel much more like you're in an intimate small town than a megalopolis!
Also try out some other areas... I spent three weeks in France last year and only 5 days in Paris:
The Loire Valley (Blois, Tours, Amboise) is lovely both as a rural retreat with great biking along the river as well as tons of historic castles and great wineries!!!
Lyon is also another great city on the Rhone river with an "Old City" area with everything from a hilltop Cathedral and Roman amphitheatre to a plethora of Indian and Asian boutiques selling furniture and textiles from the far corners of the world..truly a decorator's delight!
Wherever you go in France you will have a wonderful time, because each town is so proud of their history and culture and promote it actively...lots of info available from the local tourist boards.
Just remember to guarantee a good experience... ALWAYS say hello( Bon jour!) when you enter a store, post office, approach someone... even if this is the only French you know!.. They are an extremely polite country and will give you the "Barbarian American" treatment if you dont!
I will be there next weekend..myself !! |

My favorite place in Paris is Montmarte behind the Sacre Coeur Cathedral. There is an area there where many artists come to sell their art. They are many who will do your portrait right on the spot (usually in charcoals). They do real portraits as well as carciature. They are generally inexpensive and there are some who do a really great job. If you decide to do it, check them all out first and watch them work and then choose the one you want. Some will try to talk you into letting them do your portrait and they are not so great. There are also mimes. There are also little shops and cafés in this area. There is a good little take away crépe shop as well. The cafés tend to be expensive though. There are also interesting little shops in the streets just below the Cathedral (go down the steep stairs and go left a block or so and then right and work your way down the street toward the metro).
My other favorite place is the Eiffel Tower at night. It is lit up at night and is awesome. There are several nice views of the tower, but I personally like to get close to it, there are great pictures standing on the bridge over the Seine facing the tower. You should check out this site: Paris-Live.com which has webcams on the Eiffel Tower as well as other great places in Paris. You can also find various tours on this site, one of which is an evening tour on a boat on the Seine River which ends with dinner at the Eiffel tower. Once you get into the Paris-Live site just look for "Dinner at Eiffel Tower" and click on it. This will show you the various tours available, including prices. This site is English.
Have Fun!! |
