I am English but have lived in Pau, France (Pyrénées) for two and a half years. I think that France has a lot of myth and romance surrounding it and so, from afar, it is easy to get carried away with the idea of it being a great place. Maybe it's because it's so old and so different from your life now.

French people have a very particular culture. The accent is very much around food and drink, the pace of life is very slow (not a bad thing), but they can be xenophobic and defensive about their language. I speak French but I have found life terribly hard here at times. My eldest daughter goes to a French school and I have had to move her because she was getting pushed around just for being English, even though I ended up volunteering to teach English at the school. Now she's at a school where the kids are really nice but the teachers humiliate her if she makes grammatical errors. The school system is tough here.

I may be generalising and I apologise for any offence from French readers, but this is my general experience even though I have met some adorable people.

You should spend some time here if you can. I don't know where you're from, but there are cheap airlines. I flew with Zoom to Toronto in the summer from Paris and I know prices start from 200 Can dollars. Don't try and get rid of your obsession, explore it.

I find it enjoyable to know alot about Europe, but not France, instead England. If it doesn't damage something about you, in any way, it really doesn't matter. Loving to watch t.v. about it, reading stuff about it -- that isn't a problem at all. You just like it, the way you like some thing, that you'd want to know more about it.

Good luck and have fun.

Espectacularrrrr!
