FRENCH: is this rude?

my french teacher said that i cannot say "Bonjour Madame Dupont" but instead I can only say "Bonjour Madame"

i know that in France when talking to a store owner for example all you say is Bonjour Madame but why did my teacher say i was RUDE for saying "Bonjour Madame Dupont

SINCE WHEN??

I agree with Vladimir, it is not so much rude as more commercial or obsequious. In normal, everyday greeting you just say Bonjour, Madame. or Bonjour, Monsieur. If you add the family name you will probably surprise the person you are greeting and not give a very good image of yourself.

Not true.

not rude

Vladimir ILL
The difference between Bonjour Madame - and bonjour Madame Dupont - is in the first case something very neutral, and the second one rather commercial and obsequious - but not nasty

The chic of the chic being "Bonjour" "Au revoir" etc -

it is not rude, your french teacher needs to learn the # savoir-vivre # all over again.
many people like to be greeted with the last name included in the greeting, when first meeting them.
it would not be a sign of disrespect if you did not include her last name, upon greeting Madame Dupont.

RedKard
No, of course it's not! I am a French-Canadian and have been speaking French for many years. I know for a fact that is not rude, I don't think your teacher was thinking straight!

Not Rude at all!
Your teacher doesn't sound very nice.
I still call my teacher ms. even though she got married over the summer.
I pretty much do it just to annoy her.
haha now that's rude.
I very much refuse to call her by her new name.
You would understand if you met her.
best answer please
