Facts about the french baguette, why do french people love it so much ?

can someone tell me more information on this bread i've googled its origins and i know a couple of things, like that the french eat it everyday, but i would like to know more.

-do they have baguette cook-offs or something like that?
-and do they think its offensive that in american films we play with the baguettes as swords?
any other facts will help. thank you.

Baguette cook-off? What the heck is that? Baguette is just a light white bread we buy at bakeries.
You can do whatever you want with baguettes, we've been playing with them way longer than you have. The number of baguettes I broke as a kid using them as swords, sticks, pen (with chocolate as ink), support for building cabines (don't), or blunt weapons to hit your little brother with. We don't have particularly patriotic feelings towards a baguette.
Baguette is a day bread, it will dry off quickly and can't be kept. When you've bought a fresh oven warm one you walk home nimbling on the tip. mmmh...
You have different kinds of baguette. The regular one and the baguette Ă  l'ancienne, same weight but the second one is denser and more tasty.
Fresh baguette for breakfast is a must. Slice a part lengthwise, butter it up, some jam, and dunk it in your coffee. That's real French breakfast.

Bread is a staple in most western cultures.

If Americans have little real passion for bread it is because, for the most part, they have become accustomed to the cottony, tasteless, "helps build strong bodies 12 ways", its a wonder they get to call it bread, junk that has taken the place of proper bread in the States.

Get a baguette still warm from the oven in a proper Parisian boulangerie and you will immediately understand.

the quality of bread is very important in France, so your basic baguette is pretty good too. Also there are artisan bakeries where you get oldfashioned bagette made with coarser flour and it's divine. As to being offended by the idea of using bread as swords, the French would think it a waste of good bread, that's all. Which it is.

The main reason why the French love it so much is because it's cheap! It's delicious and a whole baguette only costs 90 centers because it's subsidized by the government. Also, there's a strong tradition of bread & cheese & wine in France. They would seriously perish without those foods.
