Famous cartoon mascots from France? |
Hi,
I am doing an independent art project for school and I thought it would be fun to research on various cartoons characters produced/created by different countries that may or may not be famous or well known outside of their country of origin. For example, everyone knows Mickey Mouse is a cartoon character created in the US. But few in America know about the Smurfs, but they are very well known in Europe.
I am hoping you can help me by being nostalgic and remembering the cartoons you watched when you were little. The only thing is that the cartoon has to be produced in France.
If you know the show, the character's name or production company, that would be great. I can do further research with those names.
Please and Thank you. |

The Barbapapas are French: http://www.naughtykitty.org/barbapapa.html

Mimi Cracra too but I don't think it exported outside France: http://www.mimicracra.com/

The Smurfs are originally Belgian comic characters but the TV series was produced in the US. Also the Barbapapas are French comics but the TV series was made in Japan (based on the original French scenarios). |

I am French and my children adored the Astérix cartoons (Books and films by the writer René Goscinny et the artist Albert Uderzo who are French) and the Tintin stories by Hergé (who was a Belgian, but Tintin "lived" in France.)

When we were in England they loved Captain Pugwash who was English.

Other great English favourites were all the Raymond Briggs cartoons: The Snowman,Grandpa, Father Christmas, The Bear , etc...also made in England, and Michael Bond's Paddington with the extraordinary prototype of an English family.

On the whole few cartoons have been made for children in France. They buy the films from America or Japan and adapt them into French, though the original of the Magic Roundabout (Le manége enchanté) was French and adapted with an English dialogue by Eric Thompson for British audiences.

As a child in France I was enchanted by all the French versions of Walt Disney's earlier films and my favourite was "Les aristochats". |
