You can get a ferry to St. Malo - which is in Brittany. Cherbourg is in Normandy.

FERRIES

Brittany Ferries run services directly into Brittany from Portsmouth (U.K.) to St Malo (around 9 hours sailing) & Plymouth (U.K.) to Roscoff . They also run services from Cork (Ireland) to Roscoff.

P&O Ferries run sevices from the U.K. into Cherbourg & La Harve in Normandy. It is around 3-4 hour drive to central Brittany, however the Ferry crossing time is considerably shorter (2-3) hours.

All the above are accurate answers, but you may want to check the prices and compare them with the shorter crossings - even though that means you have more driving to do - I have booked to travel on 30 July to 10 August - we are heading down the West coast, so a Western Channel crossing seemed to make sense - except that they wanted £350 or more for the privilege - we are instead going via Dunkerque for £71 - including the car! Norflok lines are also a delight in that they have no coaches so you don't get hoards of screaming kids etc - so a more relaxed crossing. You then get onto the motorway system very quickly and the drive to Brittany is not too bad and even with tolls and petrol, you will save money over the Western crossings.
