For how long should someone stay to visit Paris? |
I have a friend in New York, who want to come to Paris for the first time in her life and plan to stay there for only 3 days. What do you think of this duration? |

Three days is not really enough time to absorb the culture or even really recover from jet lag. But if that's the amount of time she's going to be there, plan the major points of interest in advance. Try to stick to a reasonable schedule but be realistic that you're not going to see everything and probably going to be very tired.
My rule of thumb for vacations abroad is 5 days minimum, 7-10 days optimum. Five days at a minimum really gives you the opportunity to see most things without rushing. A week to 10 days gives you the chance to see (and eat!) most everything you want. |

If you plan well and assuming you are well familiar with the city, three days are enough to see famous sites. But that doesn't spare time to discover the more local yet fascinating parts and really soak into the city. |

I'm afraid 3 days is not long enough
indeed, in paris, you have 3/4 big museums, about 10 important monuments, 2 or 3 wonderful gardens and lots of places for walking and window-shopping
In a 3-day time, she will see what's on postal cards, namely the most essential but not enough to really appreciate the city, its places and its atmospheren, especially if she likes window-shopping
according to me, a duration of 7 days is good, you will what's both famous and what you like without rushing |

Of course this is not enough time for a visit to Paris, especially for a first time visit.
But I agree with the previous answer that it is common for tourists to spend only a short time in any one particular city.
For many people, travel is a children's game of "treasure hunt." They race from place to place with a list of famous places or things to see, checking off items and quickly moving on.
Its unfortunate but that is the reality. |

Three days would be a very quick trip. It would allow you enough time to see the major sites and a museum or two, but would be hectic. If your friend is going to travel all the way from NYC, I would suggest they take at least 5 days.
My wife and I stayed seven days and six nights in Paris last year. That was enough time to see all the major sites and do a little exploration. With that said, we are considering a return trip for another week some time in the future.

To be honest between 2-4 days is somewhat normal for Paris. Its enough time to see all the sites and appreciate the city and usually people allow one day for rest, people that tend to go for weeks are generally people who have family or REALLY like the
place |

3 days is not long enough ... she'll only manage to visit the main attractions ... you'll need at least a week to visit it well .. |

It depends what means seeing a city for her. 3 days is enough to visit Paris from a tourist bus with a guide, rushing from a place to another, visiting 2 or 3 spots in some museums, but for people who like art, 3-4 full days are the basic minimum to see the main museums + Versailles. To this you should add sightseeing by foot of the main historical quarters and tourists spots. In 3 days she will not see much of Paris. |
