actually "french" fries are from Belgium !
There's not so much obese people here but it's increasing , 10 years ago they were really few (or just the >50-55 year olds) , now they're much more, and younger (children are more and more concerned)..
3. maybe because of sodas and food like chocolate , cakes very fat and full of sugar you eat between 2 meals.. Also, because it needs time , people cook less than it the past and often buy food they only have to put in the microwave four which are fat
2. don't really know..
we eat a lot of cheese and bread (the big cliché but that's actually true ! )
lot of sauce
4. they've forbidden food distributors in schools (or only apples ^^ ) and put a message at the bottom of food tv adverts saying " eatinng too fat is bad for your health.." to prevent obesity but excepting that not much.. |

Diet has not prevented obesity in France. A different strength of character has. Ignorance about France and their attitude to diet is unbelievable.
French fries for instance are an American invention with a nonsensical name. They were invented in the early part of the last century in an American restaurant. They are NOT French. Pizzas are not Italian, they are also an American invention.
The Americans invented fast food, and Lycra - funny how the two go together.
The French do not have a special diet, they have a special attitude to self indulgence - they avoid it - they don't over indulge. There is little that you get in America that you cannot get in France, but the proliferation of neon clad fast food purveyors hasn't got a foothold. Restaurants have healthy serving sizes, they don't upgrade or supersize. French women learn to cook and how to feed their families in a healthy manner. French children are not indulged, they are raised to be polite, obedient and disciplined. French women are sexy, they know they are and they deliberately work at staying that way. They eat good things, chocolate, ice cream, croissants, Crème Brule, all manner of delicious foods - but in moderation with self control. They simply don't pig out the way Americans do. They get more exercise, they walk, they don't sit in front of TVs all day feeding their faces. And it is the women who feed their men - healthily. |

I think that this is just a question of "cutlur" and how we approach the act of "feeding ourself"
Here we are normally raised to appreciate what we eat..French familly have centuries of food cultur behind them
this is not the case in most Anglo Saxon countries...maybe because for you feeding yourslef is just enought when for us
eating is like a second religion.
Here most people are careful about what they eat ...this is not the case in US or England ...
Of course nothing is never perfect so we still have Mac Donalds or KFC here but most people dont go there every day ..its just a "once in a while " thing...
Good food is a question of health..so what are you waiting for for better eating? |

I went to France 7 months ago and noticed:
It's really hard to find fast food places like McDonalds, KFC, Burger King (Hungry Jacks)
A lot of people walk everywhere
Lots of people use bikes
Europeans just plainly hate junk food - they literally love the good stuff and eat things like croissants in moderation
They're very aware of appearance and fashion, but many of them don't diet, they just have very, very social lives and are busy all the time |

France has problem with the obesity. It's easier to go in Mc **** than cook fresh product... Eat fresh product mean that you have to go every day to buy your product in the market and people don't have time or growing them at home but they don't have space for.
But actually the number of obese in France is smaller than in the other big European country (UK,Germany,Italy). I read something about it few month ago, it's because we want more to protect our culture than the other european country. So we go less in fast food, and to have try fast food in Canada, hamburger are smaller and with less fat.
1) For the rate of obese people you may go on this website:
http://www.economist.com/world/europe/displaystory.cfm?story_id=5328398
2) The traditional french cuisine is not at all diet. I was in a family in Canada and I was surprise they were eating twice more than me. The problem is probably more about quantity than about quality.
3) The causes of obesity are the one I described in my introduction.
4) It's a real problem now in France there are lots of commercials for telling that we have to eat at least "5 fruits and vegetables per day" (5 fruits et légumes par jour)
5) I think you may speak than during all our schooling we are eating at the school cafeteria and than normally there the meal should be well balanced. So we learn how to eat at school. It's in our school education, but we don't have any cooking lessons. |
