Rillifane
France continues to maintain these far flung outposts primarily as a means of insuring its ability to project its influence and its military power globally without requiring outside help.

The French Empire may have largely disappeared but France remains a player on the world stage and world powers require bases from which to operate.

Gingko

I can add to Rillifane than in this region people are really happy to be French. They have social security and European comunity give lots of money to devlop this territory.
Few years ago in the Indian Ocean some old french island ask to came back in France. This is the group of 4 island (Comoro Island) one is stay to the french (Mayotte) but the 3 other became independent in 1957.

A correction only one of the three Comoro Island ask to be French again.

Guyane is the lauch base of ESA (European Spatial Agency), where Ariane rocket are launch. It is also an place where the Foreign Legion training in jungle, and protect the ESA base BTW.

Guadeloupe and nouvelle caledonie are touristic place, eventually guadeloupe have a geological science lab watching the volcano Piton de la fournaise.
