Weddings: France is a lay state and all marriages MUST be performed by a mayor or his deputy in a town hall. It is illegal to have a church wedding without producing the marriage certificate from the town hall first. So you get married at the town hall, then you go to the church if you want a religious wedding. The cars that follow the bride and groom toot their horns loudly on the way and are decorated with ribbons on door handles and things like aerials. Bridesmaids, if any, are small children, never adults. After a wedding there is usually a big meal with speeches and perhaps some singing then some dancing afterwards. The wedding cake is made of dozens of small choux stuck together with hard caramel, and there is an effigy of the bride and groom at the top. It is called a pièce montée.

Good- bye: Au revoir/ Salut/ Ciao!( from the Italian)
Yes, we shake hands with friends and people we are being introduced to. If we know people well : Kiss on cheeks (You kiss left then right cheek. In Paris left, right, left)
Common gestures:
Wave for "Good-bye"and/ or blow kisses.
Thumb- up for everything OK. Thumb down for Don't do that, or it's bad.
People sometimes stick their tongue out but it's rude, and they cross their fingers behind their back if they are telling a lie. They throw salt over their left shoulder if they have spilt some on the table. Some people make a cross on a loaf of bread before starting cutting it. Touch wood to avoid bad luck.
Advertisements and slogans:
"Pour chacun, pour chacune, biscuits Brun, pâtes La Lune ".
"Adoptez le shampoing Dop"

Mitzbaby is right but for the holidays it has no link with the independance since France wasn't a colony ...
EDIT : no need to give me two fingers down, I don't really see who could feel hurt by reading that France was never a colony. Did you really think that the day of the holidays in France could have something to do with the independance day ? |
