Bienvenue en France a toi et ta maman !
French language is very hard and has no logic most of the time. You can take a little book with everyday phrases in French with you (including the pronounciation) and if you let the language enter your brain during your trip (people, TV, radio, etc) it will help you a lot !
Good luck and enjoy !
PS: Parisian are as rude as NewYorkers, I would say ever worse, just be prepared !
