You should ABSOLUTELY go. It is a real eye-opener for many!

I went on two exchanges, to France first, and it was nice but my exchange parter at the time was a little too sophisticated for me .... then a couple of years later I went on an exchange to Germany and the family were lovely, my exchange partner was this initially very shy girl who opened up after a couple of days ... she was a bit overwhelmed by my big noisy family at first, but she became one of our own, we loved her.

Anja Pietz from Bergisch-Gladbach, if you're out there, get in touch with your 'Irish' family, we'd love to hear from you.

It was the best year of my life. I learned the language, I met people, I saw things and I had some of the best food ever. I would try to go for a minimum of 1 academic year. It takes about 3 months to process the language quickly enough so that you can understand the television (they speak really fast on tv.) For a year you would be somewhat of a star. Not many Americans learn French. So many French people would want to talk with you and find about how you really are. Often enough they would invite you over and feed you. DO THIS!

I think it will be a valuable learning experience for you.

Allow you to develop independant skills, meet new people, improve on the language. A win all situation.
