French research topic?

For my French class, I need to write a research paper on anything French. It could be a person, place, idea, etc. Does anyone with considerable knowledge about France have any suggestions? I would like a topic that is interesting and has a wealth of information available about it. If there's a famous French person or place that you're passionate about and think would make a good research topic, please let me know. Thanks in advance!

Jean-Jacques Cousteau, he was French

Le Louvre which was a medieval fortress before becoming a royal palace and now the biggest French museum. 600 years of history.

the electronic chip of the credit card (French invention, yes)

The history of the Eiffel Tower which was nearly torn down after it was built

The Normandy beaches and the Museum of the Landing.

Nostradamus, the guy who wrote almanachs and his famous quatrains which are supposed to see in the future, people are still agonising over those

Joan of Arc who ended up so badly because of the Brits *blow raspberry*

The Montgolfier brothers, who invented the hot air balloon.

So many others...

Good luck

hello I'm french! but I don't live in France! I live in an oversea territory, Reunion Island, a bit of France in the Indian ocean near South Africa and Mauritius! it is often unknown! It is like Guadeloupe or Guyane!!!
It could be a good topic! it's a small piece of land but it's a beautiful place with a real "melting pot"!
there had been slavery here and it has existed politically speaking since 16th c.!!!( like USA):-D!!!
I'll try to find links for you!!!
Bye!

Why not the famous "Loire-Castles"? You can mix history(ancient up to day),show great pics and maybe give travel advices.

How much work do you really want to do?

I'm assuming that you're an American High School student so perhaps on of these topics would be appropriate:

1. Compare and contrast the American and French Presidential systems.

2. How do French standards of journalism compare to American (French papers tend to be openly partisan while American usually claim to be objective).

3. Is the French system of government backed health insurance the right way to solve the American health insurance crisis?

And what about the French Revolution? You'll have plenty of documents available on wiki. Moreover, you could do a link with Lafayette who helped American be independant. I think it's a good subject because you'll have a lot of things to link between France and America, and it's quiet a subject of actuality.

You can choose too something more difficult like french philosophers, or "French way of life", or French culture around the world...

Good luck

If you are going to write a paper on someone from France, its a good idea to pick someone that has had a considerable impact on the country, interesting/colouful personality and not that incredibly famous :
You might want to write a paper on
- Francois the 1st (built alot of castles, brought Da Vinci to France, etc, etc)
- Picasso (very interesting private life, reflected in his different works of art)
- Joan of Arc (poor thing got caught up in French history in spite of herself)

If you want to choose a place.....I suggest choosing the whole of the country !!! Do a tour, region by region of different specialities...Depending on what your interests are... Most towns have culinary specialities e.g Marseille-the bouillabaisse, or special handicrafts e.g. Limoges - fine china
etc, etc...

I have different ideas as a Swiss French:
1. tourism : Provence (perfume, fresh herbs, landscape, sunshine, traditions), Normandie, Bordeaux, Alpes.. there are many interesting places to speak about...
2. racism or the difficulty of the integration of North African people in France such as Algerian (les cités where everybody from a same religion or ethny live together...)

Good luck

If it's a French language class, this might be cool: There are a lot of French words used in the English language, like 'fiancée' for example. That might be apropos (À propos)!

Bonne chance!
