You could try like this :

First : Bonjour Monsieur (madame if it's a woman),
usually he(she) will ask You if you did make your choice (est-ce que vous avez choisi) or if he(she) can take your order (puis-je prendre votre commande)

answer yes, then, :
en entrée je prendrais une salade nicoise, or any other dish on the card
ensuite je voudrais une entrecôte , or des filets de sole (fish) , you can also usually chose what you want to eat with , (just add "avec des" (with))frites (french fries), légumes (vegetables), du riz (rice), des pates (pasta usually spaghettis)
Comme dessert j'aimerais (as dessert I would like) une glace au chocolat (chocolate ice cream), or une part de gateau (a piece of cake), or une salade de fruits (fruits salad).

Don't forget to say thank you, lol (merci)

On the market :
First you need to know what quantity you wish to buy
With the metric system (I don't know whare you come from) you'll maybe have to convert.
Usually, you buy one or several kilo, or a half kilo.
Here are the names of several fruits and vegetables.
Just say : je désirerais or je voudrais (I wish)
For example, je désirerais un kilo de pommes (I would like 1 kilo apples)
do the same with some of the items here :
poires (pears)
Peches(peaches)
fraises (strawberries)
Pommes de terre (potatoes)
Tomates (tomatoes)
You can also ask for a cucumber, (donnez moi un concombre), and a bit of parsley please (et un peu de persil, s'il vous plait)
You can end with a "thank you, have a nice day"
Merci et bonne journée !

Just say the item you see in the menu and add "s'il vous plait"-- "Les oeufs mayonnaise, s.v.p." (eggs mayonnaise or deviled eggs in the US please) or "Le steak frites, svp" (steak and fries please). You can order the steak --bleu (blue or lightly seared and practically raw on the inside, rare (rare), moyen (medium) or bien cuit (well done, but the steak will be tough). You already understand that entree in French refers to an appetizer while in the US, entree means main dish.

Un kilo comme ca (a kilo of this and you point to the fruit or veggie). Un demi kilo comme ca (a half kilo of this). Or deux comme ca (2 of these please). Etc. Many of the produce depts. (in supermarkets)in France are self service. You weigh the produce (in a plastic bag) and the computerized scale will print out the weight and price ( and you affix the sticker to the bag).

Can you please help me?-- S.V.P. m'aidez. The distress call May day comes from "m'aidez" or help me.
