Hey we are look-alikes. Nice to meet you, you are the first one I meet.
Well about Paris, I’m french but I live far from there. So what I can say about Paris is that it’s the capital city of France and the administrative centre of the Île-de-France area, on the Seine. Paris constitutes a department of 20 districts. There are about 2 150 000 inhabitants, more than 9 500 000 with the suburbs.
There’s a long history about Paris with traces in the year 52 before Jesus-Christ… So there, maybe you can find happiness in these websites :

History :

Was called Lutecia (Lutèce) at Gallo-Roman times. The Gallic tribe that was living in the area were the Parisii.

Wasn't the capital of Gauls, it was Lugdunum (now Lyons). It seems it was the Franks (Clovis) that made Paris capital of France in the 5th century. The count of Paris was a man of great power and Hugues Capet ousted the old Merovingian dynasty in 987 to become King (beginning of Capetian dynasty).

Paris became then the center of a more and more large French Kingdom, and the biggest city of France. At the times of Francois Ier, the Loire Valley was however more prestigious, but Paris regained after its royal leading position. Louis XIV moved to Versailles (city which is close) during his reign. In 1789, Paris was the center of French revolution.

During Napoleon III reign, Haussmann considerably changed the city, ousted poor people to the suburbs and transformed many popular & poor places into rich buildings - and this trend still goes on as the building prices keep being very high.

Paris was occupied in 1870 by the Prussians (now Germans) during the war lost by Napoleon III, and the short-living experience of the Commune of Paris and its bloody end (1871) marked the memory of political left-wing worldwide.

Paris was occupied by Germans from 1940 to 1944, liberated by the Allied Forces. It's still the capital of France.

Poltically : it's the capital of France (2,000,000 inhabitants, and 8,000,000 with the suburbs) which makes it a very big town in Europe. And it's also a "département", i.e. a district of France normally formed by many towns.

President Chirac was 18 years mayor of Paris. Today, it's Bertrand Delanoe (center left), notorious for publicly announced his homosexuality, and was nevertheless elected.

For the rest, it was the center of European cultural, industrial, scientific, economic... life for many centuries, and it's still a very important place.

Many places to see there : Eiffel tower (300 m) became its symbol, as well as the Arc de Triomphe celebrating Napoleonian victories, the cathedral de Notre-Dame (XIIthe century), the Sacré-Coeur basilic... Museum from Le Louvre has many many art paintings and sculptures to see, including the famous Joconde by Da Vinci and the Venus de Milo. For modern art, see Center Georges Pompidou-Beaubourg. The Montmartre quartier is known since many times, and it regained notoriety since the success of "Amelie" with Audrey Tautou... The Champs Elysées avenue will take you from Arc de Triimophe to Place de la Concorde. And there are plenty of things to see... It's one of the most touristic places in Europe and in the world.

After, there are lot of traffic jams, it may be not a place easy to live if you don't have a big salary, the weather is not the best you can find in France, although it is nevertheless "ok". There's also a little rivalry between Paris and the Province (Province = France minus Paris), or to say, between Parisians and people living in Province, as they consider Parisians to be sometimes pretentious and living in a somewhat "unreal" environment comparing to the rest of the country. But I guess it happens in many countries.

All I can do in 15 mn. Is it ok ?

Trace Element
It was originally a fortified city (with walls around it and various gates of entry) hence the various "Portes" which are still in existence today.

Before Paris was liberated by the Allies near the end of World War 2, Hitler gave the order to destroy Paris and burn it to the ground. The German general in charge of Paris refused to obey the order.
