My suggestions: jeans, sweaters, tops, jackets, trenchcoat, leggings, cute winter hats, trendy scarves, dresses and skirts for more formal occasions. Everyone wears a lot of black there, especially trendy black boots for the women. I wouldn't necessarily wait till you get there since just having got back from Paris....the clothes are hugely expensive as a foreigner. The Euro is crazy high and non-Europeans are getting the rough end of the deal. I have a friend who lives in Paris and she is from the States. She does huge amounts of shopping in the states because Parisian clothes are so expensive (and not just the designer ones!). That tells you something!

I agree with Rillifane. Wait until you get there and go shopping. You will find the fashion is different there.
Take your jeans but people dress up a bit more in Paris. Pretty much like NY but not as cold.

Rillifane
No, I'm afraid that only jeans will not do.

While people certainly wear jeans in France I think you will feel very under dressed if you wear them on all occasions.

But rather than taking advice on clothing from some old geezer like me you might just want to wait until you get there to do some shopping.

Paris can be quite cold in the winter so warm clothes are a must. Layering is a good idea since the interiors of buildings or the inside of metro car can be oppressively warm if you can't easily slip off a layer.

It depends on what you will do there.
Studying..........It'll be ok. Working, it won't be !!

You know Paris, it's like any other big city in the world.....you can wear anything !!!
Of course, we pay attention about clothes and stuff........But u're not french, so u don't care !!!

In winter, it's pretty cold over there, and rainy !!!! It can snow sometimes also.
If you're from a big city, I'm sure it's not gonna be an issue !!!

Paris style is very different. The people there dress up a bit more and the style is different too. If you want, you can buy some t-shirts that are cheap before you leave. It also depends on how much money you have. Paris is pretty expensive and if you're budget isn't too good, then it's best to probably just get some clothes before you leave. If money isn't a problem though, then shop! shop! shop!

MadameZ
Parisians wear clothes just like other humans do, so take your clothes if you plan to wear any. (Despite how it may seem, the Parisians are not impressed by nudism unless you are well-endowed.)

If you plan to dress "French", better throw everything out and start over in Paris. Americans dress like "Americans"...i.e., gross!!
